This vintage Japanese kakejiku hanging scroll features bold black calligraphy displaying the two kanji 守徳, which may be read as Shutoku.
The first character, 守, means to protect, preserve, observe, or uphold, while 徳 refers to virtue, moral character, integrity, or benevolence. Together, the phrase can be interpreted as “upholding virtue,” “preserving moral integrity,” or “remaining faithful to one’s principles.”
Traditional Japanese hanging scrolls are created by mounting a work of calligraphy or painting on decorative paper or textile so that it can be hung for appreciation and rolled for storage.
Material: Hand-brushed ink on paper with textile or textile-style decorative borders, paper backing, hanging cord
Dimensions: Total length: approximately 140 cm; width: approximately 34 cm.
Condition: Vintage, good condition. Minor creases, wrinkles, marks, discoloration, edge wear, or other signs of age and previous storage may be present.
