VINTAGE - Japanese Kakejiku Calligraphy Hanging Scroll – Amaterasu Ōmikami

This vintage Japanese kakejiku hanging scroll features the sacred calligraphic inscription 天照皇大神, read as Amaterasu Sume Ōkami or Amaterasu Kōtaijin.

The inscription is a reverential name for Amaterasu Ōmikami, the solar deity enshrined at Ise Jingū and one of the central deities of Shinto tradition. Japanese hanging scrolls bearing this inscription are commonly displayed as devotional or auspicious works expressing prayers for peace, protection, happiness, and prosperity.

The main characters are rendered in bold black brushwork on a warm cream-colored paper panel. A smaller vertical inscription and two red seals appear on the left side, while an additional square seal overlaps part of the central calligraphy.

The artwork is mounted with an elegant orange-gold brocade-style border featuring a finely woven floral pattern. The upper and lower sections use a restrained pale beige fabric, creating a balanced and traditional presentation.

This scroll would be suitable for display in a tokonoma-style alcove, prayer room, meditation space, study, entryway, or Japanese-inspired interior.
